LAW 509 Civil Procedure

Course Description

The object of this course is to introduce first year students to the civil litigation process in the federal courts. It focuses on the four basic steps in pre-trial litigation under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure: the plaintiff's complaint, the defendant's response to the complaint, discovery of relevant materials by all parties, and disposition on the merits by a motion for summary judgment. The course also includes the attendant jurisdictional questions (subject matter jurisdiction and personal jurisdiction), federal court organization, and certain constitutional matters relating to the civil litigation process. Civil trials and appeals are addressed in upper level electives. (Required Course)
